A person reads every request. We are still lining up licensed local roofers, so we can't promise an estimate or a reply time yet. For water coming in right now, call a licensed roofer directly.

1. Stay safe

Keep away from downed lines and don't climb onto the roof. Check ceilings for sagging or water before entering rooms below damaged areas.

2. Document everything

  • Photograph and video the roof from the ground, plus any debris and interior damage.
  • Note the date and the storm.
  • Keep receipts for tarps, water removal and other temporary protection.

3. Limit further damage

Your policy likely expects reasonable steps to prevent more damage, such as a tarp over an opening. Have a roofer install it if it means going on the roof.

4. Talk to your insurer

Report the claim through your insurer's process and read what your policy covers. Florida law prohibits contractors from offering you gifts or incentives to file a roof claim, and newer homeowner policies limit assignment of benefits, so be wary of anyone who wants to take over your claim.

5. Hire a licensed roofer

After a storm, out-of-area crews and door knockers appear. Verify every company on the Florida DBPR license search, get the scope in writing, and don't pay large deposits before work is scheduled.

Questions people ask

How do I know if my roof has storm damage?

Look from the ground for missing shingles or tiles, lifted edges, dents on metal or vents, and debris in gutters. Inside, look for new stains. A roofer can confirm what you can't see.

How long do I have to file a claim?

Florida sets deadlines for property claims, and your policy may add its own conditions. Check with your insurer as soon as you can.

Should I wait for the adjuster before repairs?

Make temporary repairs to prevent more damage and keep receipts. Ask your insurer before permanent repairs.
